Founded in 1984, Funda Community Centre’s Fine Arts department is a Soweto-based community college that specialises in visual, fine and performance arts. It is well-established and highly recognised for its immense developmental and contribution to South Africa’s Arts industry.
The unit has been under the same leadership of Charles Nkosi – a prominent artist himself – who since his involvement with the institution as of 1986 has designed and created a well and established international exchange programme that supports the college’s strong exhibition profile. The exchange programme is awarded to top achieving students, who, through their unique cultural heritage, narrate their personal experiences.
As a developmental project, the art ranges from photography to prints to sculptures and is as interesting as its dialogue. The selection process is purely based on a student’s ability to utilise various mediums to delve into the complexities of history and narratives of social transformation in South Africa. Mainly senior students in their final year, the show intends for the project to draw attention to the ambiguity of social equality and initiate dialogue, especially in a college atmosphere when diverse and creative expression is central to moderate arts experience. The project is managed by Hlengiwe Vilakati, an art ardent and Marketing Manager at CKC Communications.
